Kendall Jenner's picture of herself lying on the floor with her long dark mane styled into love hearts broke the record last month for the most 'liked' picture on Instagram.

The snap attracted an impressive 2.9 million double taps and inspired a slew of copycat hairstyles.

But the model's romantic 'do has already been eclipsed by a similar trend in South Korea, where young women style their fringes into an upside-down love heart shape.

The look is reportedly most fashionable amongst teens and young women in the city's Gangbuk District.

It's not just a trend for the girls though - a handful of men have featured in selfies on Instagram and other sites.

One male didn't appear thrilled to be taking part in the latest fad though, covering his face with his hand as the photographer captured his new 'do. 

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN FEMAIL TEST THE HEART-BANGS HAIR TREND? 

FEMAIL decided to test this new beauty craze for ourselves.

Daily Mail Australia have surprisingly few team members sporting fringes, and even fewer willing to try out the look in the name of research.

But one brave member of the team, Karen King, stepped up to the task.

No curling iron was handy, so we turned to a straightener in our attempt to create our version of heart-bangs hair.

Getting two evenly curled strands is surprisingly difficult. And it took half a can of hairspray to get them to remain flicked inwards.

The result: Not quite what we were aiming for

RESULT 

Compared to the expertly shaped hearts some of the Korean girls are rocking, our attempt was woefully less than perfect, and in no way resembled an upside-down love heart.

Perhaps Karen's fringe was too short, or - more likely - my hair styling skills leave much to be desired. 

KAREN'S VERDICT

'Well this trend works completely against what I try to achieve most mornings!

'95 per cent of the time, I generally use my straightener to remove the bumps and kinks. The other 5 per cent I just can’t be bothered so I’ll wear a cap.

'With time and practice, I’m sure the art could be perfected, perhaps rocking other shapes, however I’m not sure about having to use this much hairspray daily. My forehead is lacquered.

'When I returned to my desk, I stared down my colleague sitting next to me who looked back awkwardly – not because of the love heart I painstakingly fried my fingers trying to create… but because he wasn’t exactly sure, what about me was different. Great.'
